We collect you in Ouarzazate and begin just outside town at Aït Ben Haddou, the tiered earthen ksar that is one of Morocco's most filmed locations — from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones. You'll cross the riverbed and climb through its kasbahs to the old granary with a local guide, the High Atlas glittering behind. Returning east, we pass through the lush Skoura palm oasis, dotted with old kasbahs including Amridil, before following the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the rose-coloured Dades Valley. There's time for a mint tea overlooking the valley before we reach our guesthouse, and an evening stroll among the gardens and mud-brick villages. A gentle, scenic first day with frequent photo stops. (approx. 3 hrs driving)
After breakfast we explore the upper Dades Valley with its surreal wind-carved 'monkey-finger' rock formations and famous hairpin road, then drive to the magnificent Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs soar 300 metres above a narrow river. You can walk the flat canyon floor in the cool air — an easy, dramatic stroll suitable for all ages. Continuing east through Tinghir's vast palmery and across pre-Saharan plains, with a lunch stop along the way, we reach the edge of the Sahara at Merzouga in the late afternoon. Here you meet your camels for a sunset trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, arriving at the Berber camp as the sand turns crimson, for a tagine dinner, drumming around the fire and superb stargazing. (approx. 5 hrs driving)
Wake early for sunrise over Erg Chebbi — for many travellers the unforgettable moment of the trip — then ride your camel back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. Today we travel west and climb the High Atlas by the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops at panoramic viewpoints and Berber hamlets, and a relaxed lunch en route. The mountain scenery is some of the finest in Morocco — switchbacks, terraced valleys and far-reaching views over the ranges. Descending into the Haouz plain, we reach Marrakech in the evening, dropping you at your hotel or riad. It's the longest driving day, but broken up with stops and full of memorable country. (approx. 8 hrs driving)
You sleep in hand-picked riads and boutique hotels, plus a comfortable Sahara camp with private en-suite tents, real beds and a Berber dinner under the stars. Choose standard, superior or luxury and we match it.
Travel in a private, air-conditioned 4x4 or modern minivan with your own English-speaking driver-guide. No shared coaches and no waiting — you set the pace and stop wherever you like for photos.
Choose your comfort level — Comfort, Superior or Luxury — and we hand-pick every riad, kasbah hotel and desert camp to match. Exact properties are confirmed on your personalised itinerary.

Ouarzazate is known as the 'door of the desert', and starting here makes sense for more travellers than you might expect. If you've flown into Ouarzazate's airport, come to visit the famous Atlas Studios, or are already exploring the kasbah country of the south, this 3-day tour saves you the long backtrack to Marrakech and heads straight for the dunes. It's the most efficient way to reach Erg Chebbi when you're already in the region.
Despite its short length the route loses none of the south's signature sights. In three days you take in the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, the switchback gorges of the Dades and Todra, a camel trek and overnight in the Sahara, and the dramatic High Atlas crossing to Marrakech — the same highlights as longer tours, distilled into a tightly planned long weekend.
Just outside Ouarzazate stands Aït Ben Haddou, the tiered earthen ksar that is one of Morocco's most filmed locations, from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones. Crossing the riverbed and climbing through its alleys to the old granary at the top, with the High Atlas behind, is a memorable opening to the trip and an easy introduction to the mud-brick architecture of the south.
From there the route follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, with its surreal wind-sculpted rock formations and famous hairpin road, and the Todra Gorge, where sheer cliffs rise some three hundred metres above a narrow river. A short, flat walk into the gorge — cool, shaded and dramatic — is one of the highlights of the second day before you reach the desert.
At Merzouga you swap the vehicle for camels and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun sets, reaching a Berber camp for dinner around the fire, drumming and exceptionally clear stargazing far from any town. A standard camp with private tents and real beds is included, and a luxury en-suite camp can be arranged for those who want more comfort.
After sunrise over the dunes — the moment most travellers remember best — the final day crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech, where the tour ends at your hotel or riad. If you'd prefer to travel the other way, we run the same route from Marrakech to Ouarzazate for the same price; just tell us your start and end points.
Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable conditions, with warm days and mild nights. Summer is hot on the desert plains, so we time the dunes for sunset and keep midday relaxed; winter offers clear, bright days and cold desert nights that drop close to freezing, so a warm layer is essential even though the camp provides thick blankets.
Pack light layers, comfortable closed shoes for the gorges and kasbahs, sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle, plus a small day-bag for the camel trek and overnight at camp. Bedding is provided, so there's no need for a sleeping bag — and because the tour is fully private, the pace and stops flex entirely to you.
Ouarzazate has earned its nickname as the 'Hollywood of Morocco'. The vast Atlas Studios on its edge — among the largest film studios in the world by area — have hosted productions from Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator to Game of Thrones, drawn by the town's reliable light, dramatic desert backdrops and the nearby kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou. Visitors who've come to see the studios, or who've simply flown into Ouarzazate, are perfectly placed to begin a desert tour here.
The town is also a genuine crossroads of the south, where the routes from Marrakech, the Draa Valley and the Dades meet. The mighty Taourirt Kasbah in the centre, once home to the powerful Glaoui family, is worth a look before you set off east toward the dunes.
Leaving Ouarzazate the route passes through Skoura, a lush palm oasis dotted with old kasbahs, the most famous of which — Amridil — appears on Morocco's 50-dirham banknote. It's a gentle, green introduction to the day before the landscape hardens into the dramatic gorge country further on.
From there you climb into the Dades Valley, with its surreal wind-carved 'monkey-finger' rock formations and the famous hairpin road that photographers love, before the second day's walk into the Todra Gorge. Packing these landmarks into a three-day route is what makes this tour such an efficient way to see the headline sights of the south when your time is short.
Because this tour ends in Marrakech, it pairs naturally with a few nights in the red city to round out a trip. Many travellers spend two or three days in Marrakech after the desert — exploring the souks, palaces and gardens with a local guide — turning the standalone crossing into a complete week of southern Morocco. We can arrange those city days and accommodation as part of the same booking.
Equally, if you're starting in Marrakech rather than Ouarzazate, we run the identical route in reverse for the same price, finishing at the 'door of the desert'. Either direction works; we simply shape the logistics around where you begin and end.
This three-day route is ideal for travellers who are short on time but unwilling to skip the Sahara — whether you're already in Ouarzazate, have a long weekend to spare, or want to add the desert to a wider Morocco trip. It delivers the south's headline experiences, from Aït Ben Haddou to a night in the dunes, without the longer commitment of a week-long tour.
It suits couples, families and small groups equally, and because it's fully private the pace bends to you: a gentler start, more time at a viewpoint, or an upgrade to a luxury desert camp. Tell us your interests and we'll tailor the details, with no deposit due until you're happy with the plan.
Despite covering the south's headline sights, the route is planned so no single day feels frantic. The first day is the gentlest, with Aït Ben Haddou, the Skoura oasis and the Dades Valley broken up by frequent stops; the second pairs the Todra Gorge walk with the drive to the dunes and the sunset camel trek; the third is the longest, returning west over the High Atlas to Marrakech, but with photo and lunch stops along the way. Starting from Ouarzazate rather than Marrakech shaves several hours off the outward leg, which is exactly what makes a three-day desert trip comfortable rather than rushed.
