We leave Fes after breakfast and head north into the Rif Mountains, the landscape turning steadily greener and more rugged — a side of Morocco few visitors expect. The road climbs through olive groves and cork-oak forest, with viewpoints over deep valleys and whitewashed villages clinging to the slopes. By early afternoon we reach Chefchaouen, the famous blue city, in time to settle in and explore while the light is soft. You'll wander the stepped, cobalt-washed lanes, browse the Rif's wool and crafts, and climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for sunset over the blue medina. Following the coast we reach Tangier by early afternoon — a city layered with Phoenician, Roman, Portuguese and international history, long a magnet for writers and artists. With your guide you can explore the medina and kasbah, with their sea views and faded grand houses, and drive out to Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, and the dramatic Caves of Hercules with their Africa-shaped opening to the sea.
