Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Sahara Desert? (Local's Guide)

Morocco's two desert gateways compared — which dunes are worth the drive.

The short answer

For most travellers, Merzouga is the better choice: it has Morocco's tallest and most beautiful dunes (Erg Chebbi), the best desert camps and the classic Sahara experience, and it's worth the longer drive. Choose Zagora only if you're very short on time — it's a few hours closer to Marrakech, but its dunes are small and far less impressive, unless you push on to the remote Erg Chigaga (which actually takes longer than Merzouga). If the desert is the highlight of your trip, go to Merzouga.

Merzouga & Erg Chebbi in brief

Merzouga is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a vast sea of orange dunes that rise up to 150 metres — the tallest in Morocco. This is the postcard Sahara: soft, sculpted, endlessly photogenic sand, best at sunrise and sunset. Merzouga has the widest choice of desert camps, from comfortable standard bivouacs to luxury tents with private bathrooms, and the infrastructure to do the experience well. It sits about 560 km from Marrakech, so it's almost always reached over two days via Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades and Todra gorges — which is part of the appeal.

Zagora & its dunes in brief

Zagora is a desert town at the end of the palm-lined Draa Valley, closer to Marrakech (about 360 km, reachable in a long day). But the dunes right by Zagora — Tinfou and Erg Lehoudi — are small and modest, more scrubby sand hills than the towering Sahara most people picture. The truly grand dunes in this region are at Erg Chigaga, far beyond Zagora and reachable only by a long 4x4 track from M'Hamid — spectacular and remote, but a bigger undertaking that removes Zagora's main advantage of being 'quick'.

The dunes compared

This is the heart of the decision. Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is bigger, taller and more dramatic — the dunes photographers and film crews choose, and the ones that live up to the Sahara of the imagination. The Zagora-area dunes (Tinfou/Erg Lehoudi) are genuinely underwhelming by comparison, and many travellers who go there for a quick overnight come away slightly disappointed.

Erg Chigaga, further south, rivals Erg Chebbi in scale and beauty and is wilder and less visited — but reaching it takes a long off-road drive, so it's a choice for those specifically seeking remoteness, not for saving time.

Drive times and access

Zagora's one real advantage is proximity: you can reach the Draa Valley and Zagora's small dunes in a single (long) day from Marrakech, making a 2-day/1-night desert trip possible. Merzouga is farther, so the classic trip is 3 days/2 nights, breaking the drive with Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the gorges — arguably a better journey in itself.

So the honest trade-off is: Zagora saves you roughly half a day of driving but gives you distinctly lesser dunes; Merzouga costs a bit more time but delivers the real Sahara. If you can spare three days, Merzouga wins comfortably.

Camel treks and desert camps

Both destinations offer sunset camel treks into the dunes and overnight camps with dinner, drumming and stargazing. The difference is quality and choice: Merzouga's Erg Chebbi has far more camps and a wider range, including excellent private luxury options, and the taller dunes make the camel trek and sunrise more spectacular. Zagora's camps are fewer and more basic, and the shorter trek over smaller dunes is less memorable.

For a honeymoon, a special occasion, or simply the best possible desert night, Merzouga is the clear pick. Zagora's camps suit travellers who just want a taste of the desert on a tight schedule.

Which should you choose?

Choose Merzouga if the Sahara is a highlight of your trip, you want the best dunes and camps, and you can spare three days (two nights) — which is the vast majority of travellers. Choose Zagora only if you're genuinely limited to a two-day trip and accept smaller dunes as the trade-off. Choose Erg Chigaga (via M'Hamid) if you want big, wild, empty dunes and don't mind a long 4x4 journey to reach them.

In our experience, travellers who choose Merzouga rarely wish they'd gone to Zagora, while some who choose Zagora for speed wish they'd made time for Erg Chebbi. When in doubt, go to Merzouga.

How our desert tours handle it

Most of our desert tours go to Merzouga, because it delivers the Sahara people come to Morocco for. Our 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga tour is the classic: two nights out, a night in a desert camp at Erg Chebbi, and the gorges and kasbahs along the way. We also run 4- and 5-day versions with more time in the dunes, and luxury-camp upgrades for a special night.

If your schedule truly only allows two days, we'll happily arrange a Zagora trip and make it as good as it can be — but we'll always tell you honestly that Erg Chebbi is the better desert. And if you want the remote grandeur of Erg Chigaga, we can build a tailored 4x4 expedition. Tell us your dates and priorities and we'll recommend the right one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Merzouga or Zagora better for the desert?

Merzouga is better for most travellers — it has Morocco's tallest, most beautiful dunes (Erg Chebbi) and the best camps. Zagora is closer to Marrakech but its dunes are small; only choose it if you're very short on time.

How far is Merzouga vs Zagora from Marrakech?

Zagora is about 360 km (a long day's drive); Merzouga is about 560 km, usually done over two days via Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges. The extra time to Merzouga buys far better dunes.

Can you visit Zagora in 2 days?

Yes — a 2-day/1-night trip to Zagora is possible from Marrakech, which is its main appeal. Merzouga needs 3 days/2 nights, but the dunes and camps are much better.

What about Erg Chigaga?

Erg Chigaga, beyond Zagora near M'Hamid, has grand dunes rivalling Erg Chebbi but requires a long 4x4 drive to reach — great for remoteness, but it doesn't save time over Merzouga.
