Does It Snow in Morocco?

Where and when it snows in Morocco, whether you can ski, and if the cities or the desert ever see snow.

Yes — it does snow in Morocco. Every winter the peaks of the Atlas Mountains turn white, you can ski a short drive from Marrakech, and the Middle Atlas town of Ifrane is nicknamed the 'Switzerland of Morocco'. This guide explains where and when it snows in Morocco, whether you can ski, and whether the cities or the desert ever see snow.

Does it snow in Morocco?

It surprises many visitors, but yes: snow is a normal part of a Moroccan winter. It falls mainly in the mountains — the High Atlas, the Middle Atlas and the northern Rif — roughly from December to February, and sometimes from November into April at high altitude. The cities and the Sahara stay largely snow-free, but from Marrakech you can see the white peaks of the High Atlas on the horizon on a clear winter day.

Where does it snow in Morocco?

The High Atlas gets the most: Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak, is snow-capped for much of the year, and the resort of Oukaïmeden above Marrakech sits at around 2,600 m. The Middle Atlas around Ifrane and Azrou sees reliable winter snow among its cedar forests, and the Rif Mountains in the north are dusted too. Snow in the Anti-Atlas and the desert south is rare.

Can you ski in Morocco?

Yes — Morocco has two small ski areas. Oukaïmeden, about two hours from Marrakech, is one of the highest ski resorts in Africa, with a handful of lifts and runs when the snow falls. Michlifen, near Ifrane in the Middle Atlas, is the other. Be honest with your expectations: the season is short and snowfall varies a lot from year to year, so these are novelty ski days rather than an Alpine holiday.

Ifrane — the 'Switzerland of Morocco'

In the Middle Atlas, the town of Ifrane looks nothing like the rest of the country: alpine chalets, tidy gardens and cedar forests, built in the 1930s as a mountain retreat. At around 1,650 m it regularly sees snow in winter and is one of the coldest places in Morocco — the town has recorded some of the country's lowest temperatures. It makes an easy stop between Fes and the desert.

Does it snow in Marrakech or the desert?

Almost never in the city itself — Marrakech sits low and warm, though the Atlas behind it is white in winter. The Sahara is famous for heat, but the desert edge can be surprisingly cold at night, and in very rare events a thin dusting of snow has reached the desert margins of the Moroccan south. Do not plan a trip around desert snow — it is a once-in-a-decade curiosity.

When does it snow — and what to pack

Peak snow months are December to February, extending into March and April on the highest peaks. If you travel in winter, pack properly: warm layers, a hat and gloves for the mountains, and a genuinely warm jacket for desert nights, which fall below freezing. Our best time to visit Morocco guide breaks the seasons down month by month.

Seeing the snow on your Morocco trip

The easiest way to touch the snow is a day trip from Marrakech up to Oukaïmeden or an Atlas valley, and winter is a beautiful, quiet time to travel — clear light, snow-capped peaks and far fewer crowds. On a private Morocco tour we simply match the route to the season, pairing the mountains with the warmer south.
