3 vs 4 Days in the Moroccan Desert: Which Tour?

How long you really need in the Sahara — 2, 3, 4 or more days compared.

The short answer

Three days is the classic, best-value Sahara trip from Marrakech — it reaches the big dunes at Merzouga with a night in a desert camp and sees Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges on the way. Four days adds a much more relaxed pace and usually a second desert night or extra stops (the Rose Valley, Skoura, more time in the gorges), which many travellers find worth it. Two days is a rushed compromise best avoided unless you're very short on time; five or more is for those who want to go deep. For most people, choose 3 days for efficiency or 4 days for comfort.

The 3-day desert tour (the classic)

The 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga tour is the benchmark and our most popular. Day one crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Aït Ben Haddou and on to the Dades Valley; day two follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Todra Gorge to Merzouga, with a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night in a desert camp; day three returns to Marrakech after sunrise over the sand.

It's efficient and complete — you genuinely reach the best dunes and sleep in the desert — but it involves two fairly long driving days, so the pace is brisk. If your time is limited to a long weekend, this is the trip to do.

The 4-day desert tour (what the extra day adds)

A fourth day transforms the trip from efficient to relaxed. It typically buys you either a second night in the desert (more time in the dunes, a slower sunrise, optional sandboarding or a nomad visit) or an extra overnight that shortens each driving day and adds stops like the Rose Valley, the Skoura oasis or more time walking the Todra Gorge.

For couples, families, older travellers or anyone who dislikes long days in the car, the 4-day version is often the sweet spot — the same highlights with room to breathe. It costs a little more, but many travellers say the extra day is the best value in the whole trip.

Is a 2-day desert tour worth it?

A 2-day/1-night desert trip is possible, but it usually means going to Zagora rather than Merzouga, because Merzouga is too far to do well in two days. Zagora is closer, but its dunes are small and far less impressive than Erg Chebbi. You'll get a taste of the desert and one camp night, but not the towering Sahara most people picture.

Choose two days only if your schedule genuinely won't allow three. If the desert is a highlight of your Morocco trip, the extra day to reach Merzouga is well worth it — see our full comparison of Merzouga vs Zagora.

When 5+ days makes sense

Longer desert routes (5 days and up) suit travellers who want to go beyond the standard loop — linking the Sahara with the imperial city of Fes (the classic Fes-to-Marrakech desert route), adding the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, spending two nights in the sand, or combining the desert with the Atlas or the coast.

These aren't necessary to 'see the Sahara' — three days does that — but they turn a desert excursion into a broader Morocco journey. If you have the time, a 5- to 8-day route is a wonderful way to pair the dunes with the cities and mountains.

Which should you choose?

Choose 3 days if you want the best value and the complete classic experience and don't mind a couple of longer drives — it's the right answer for most first-time visitors on a tight schedule. Choose 4 days if you'd rather travel at a gentler pace, want more time in the dunes, or are travelling with children or older relatives.

Choose 2 days only if you truly can't spare three (and accept Zagora's smaller dunes), and 5+ days if you want to combine the Sahara with Fes, the coast or the mountains. When people ask us directly, we usually suggest 4 days if the budget allows, and 3 if it doesn't — both are excellent.

How our desert tours compare

We run the Sahara at every length so the choice is yours, not the itinerary's. Our 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga tour is the efficient classic; our 4- and 5-day desert tours add a slower pace, extra stops and, on request, a second desert night or a luxury camp upgrade. All are fully private and tailor-made, with your own driver-guide.

The best way to decide is to tell us your dates, your budget and who's travelling — we'll recommend the length that fits and shape the days around what you most want to see. There's no deposit until you're happy with the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 or 4 days better for the Morocco desert?

Three days is the classic, best-value trip to Merzouga's big dunes with a desert-camp night. Four days adds a more relaxed pace and usually a second desert night or extra stops — worth it if your budget and time allow, especially for families or slower travellers.

Can you do the Sahara in 2 days from Marrakech?

Only to Zagora, whose dunes are small — Merzouga is too far to do well in two days. If the desert is a highlight, take at least 3 days to reach the big Erg Chebbi dunes.

How many days do you need to see Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)?

Three days from Marrakech is the minimum to properly reach Merzouga, ride camels into the dunes and sleep in a desert camp. Four days makes it more comfortable with less driving each day.

Is the 4th day worth the extra cost?

For most travellers, yes — it shortens the long drives and adds time in the dunes (or a second desert night). Couples, families and older travellers especially value the gentler pace.
